Arappu is what Tamil households washed their hair with long before shampoo arrived, and it is still what many go back to when commercial shampoo stops working for them. The leaf is dried and ground to a fine green powder.
It is milder than shikakai, which makes it the better of the two for frequent washing and for sensitive scalp. It cleans without stripping, and it has a cooling quality that suits the hot months.
To use: mix two to three spoons with a little water into a loose paste, apply to wet hair and scalp, work it through, and rinse thoroughly. It will not lather – that is normal for a herbal wash. For external use only.
